GNC was founded by David Shakarian in Pittsburgh, PA in 1935. He first opened a health food store called Lackzoom, which specialized in yoghurt and other health food products. Within five years he expanded his business to six stores in the Pittsburgh-area.

GNC is now the world's leading health and wellness speciality store. The brand is consistently ranked as the number one franchise in its industry. There are now over 6,734 GNC stores worldwide, with a portion of these stores operated by franchisees.

The GNC Franchise system benefits from over seven decades of retail and brand power. People's desire to be fit and healthy and the increasing demand and popularity have aided GNC’s growth. They are devoted to scientific research and new product development.

GNC franchisees are offered expert guidance and support including start-up assistance, financing options (U.S), operations and in-store training and continuing support.

Corporate Social Responsibility

GNC Live Well Foundation

The GNC Live Well Foundation was founded in 2004 to raise money for the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Free Care Fund. A GNC Charity Golf event is organised by GNC employees each Autumn to raise funds for the hospital. The Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh was founded over 110 years ago and is the only hospital in the region that is dedicated to solely caring for sick children.

Vitamin Angels Alliance

GNC works with Vitamin Angels Alliance to help fight malnutrition and childhood blindness around the world. GNC regularly donate vitamins and nutritional products to help people in need.

GNC Military Division Sponsorships

GNC donate to military related causes such as the Wounded Warrior Project and the Dan Daniels Tournament. They also donate care packages to the U.S military while they are out on active duty.
